Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small girl, requiring her mother to help support the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth attended the school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She only attended school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. Then, after a time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her position. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. The company paid her working during the day in the ushering department. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
